2025 Miami Open Women’s Singles Preview

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka is the betting favorite as the 2025 Miami Open explodes onto Hard Rock Stadium’s courts this Tuesday, March 18.
But hold up—six trips, zero quarterfinal breakthroughs. The Belarusian’s about to face a firing squad of heavy hitters: World No. 2 Iga Swiatek, Indian Wells champ Mirra Andreeva, and reigning queen Danielle Collins.
Buckle up, Crush and Rush fans—this WTA 1000 Sunshine Double second leg is primed to detonate!
Past Miami Open Champs in the Main Draw
- Petra Kvitova (2023): The vets still got fangs when fit.
- Victoria Azarenka (2009, 2011, 2016): Miami’s triple-crown badass.
- Iga Swiatek (2022): The Pole’s Sunshine Double reign still haunts.
- Danielle Collins (2024): Last year’s shock champ is back to flex.
The Favorites
Aryna Sabalenka
The bookies are all-in on No. 1 seed Aryna Sabalenka, but the Miami Open is her personal nightmare—two quarterfinals, no titles.
Those Laykold courts, faster and less bouncy than Indian Wells (sans wind), should scream “Sabalenka territory.” Yet, her draw’s a buzzsaw.
She starts with either Viktoriya Tomova or Caty McNally in Round 2. Magdalena Frech or rising Polina Kudermetova could pose a challenge in the third with defending champ Danielle Collins or red-hot Donna Vekic in the Round of 16.
Can this power-packing Belarusian finally smash the Miami curse? Bet with caution!
Iga Swiatek
The 2022 Miami Open champ’s back to reclaim her throne, but her draw is a warzone.
She opens with a possible Round 2 clash against the ever-difficult Caroline Garcia and maybe Katie Boulter in the third.
Karolina Muchova (No. 15) could outfox her in Round 16, while Madison Keys or Belinda Bencic will be tricky quarter final battles.
Don’t sleep on her, but don’t bank on a title, either!
Mirra Andreeva
This 17-year-old phenom, fresh off Dubai and Indian Wells titles, is the talk of the town. Her Miami Open draw?
A USA ambush. She opens with Polina Kudermetova in the second and maybe Amanda Anisimova (No. 17) in Round 3.
Emma Navarro (No. 8) could sting in Round 16, with Jessica Pegula (No. 4) lurking in the quarters.
She’s hot as fish grease, but be careful…
Elena Rybakina
The 2024 finalist is in a slump—Doha semis aside, 2025’s been difficult.
Her 4-6 record vs. Sabalenka screams vulnerability, but that serve and baseline game is a dream wrecker.
Rybakina opens with a qualifier, then perhaps Elina Avanesyan or Petra Kvitova (Round 3). A Round of 16 clash with Coco Gauff or Maria Sakkari is possible, with Beatriz Haddad Maia or Daria Kasatkina in the quarters.
If she shakes the blues, she’s dangerous—otherwise, it’s another early exit.
Don’t Count These Players Out
Danielle Collins
The 2024 Miami Open champ is off to a slow start to her season. Her second-round matchup with Sorana Cirstea or Elisabetta Cocciaretto won’t be easy, and then it gets dicey.
Donna Vekic possibly awaits in the third round, while looming large is Sabalenka in the Round of 16.
Don’t bet on a repeat from Collins.
Coco Gauff
Gauff’s tough start to the season could continue in Miami. She opens with either Kvitova or Sophia Kenin, with long-time nemesis Maria Sakkari in the third.
Awaiting in the Round of 16 is likely Beatriz Haddad Maia or Magda Linette, and maybe Jasmine Paolini in the quarters with Sabalenka in the semis.
She could get bounced early or win it all.
Madison Keys
Australian Open champ Madison Keys has a tremendous draw. Bye to start, then Erikka Andreeva or Elina Avanesyan.
Rounds three and four could bring Jelena Ostapenko or Dayana Yastremska.
Her power could shock Swiatek in the semis—Keys is heating up!
Jessica Pegula
Jessica Pegula has a mess on her hands. She could run into Aja Tonlijanociv in the second, Anna Kalinskaya in the third, and then it gets tough.
Awaiting in the Round of 16 could be either Marta Kostyuk or Diana Schnaider and a tough potential quarterfinal encounter with Andreeva or Navarro.
Three Miami Open Sleepers
Belinda Bencic–Unseeded but dangerous. She’s 15-5 this season, with a draw to reach the second week of the Miami Open, and the experience to win it all.
Clara Tauson–On the rise. She’s 16-5 this season, and she’s a fighter. Her draw could see her reach the Round of 16 and maybe even further.
Jasmine Paolini-Coming off a career year but hasn’t enjoyed the same success this season as last. She could reach the second week and maybe win this event.
